Osun clears salary arrears with N14.2bn

A total of N14.2bn has been paid by the government of the state of Osun to clear all salary arrears. This was revealed by the governor who confirmed the said amount was paid out by his government in less than two weeks before the end of December 2016.
Aregbesola stated this when the State government opened the year with supplications as the Governor led Muslim and Christian faithful at an interdenominational thanksgiving session at the Government Secretariat, Osogbo.
Governor Aregbesola
Aregbesola, who laced his speech with songs of praises to God in Islamic and Christian ways, said with what befell the state before the close of 2015, it was gratifying that the state bounced back in what can now be felt as relief from the hardship of last year.
He said the ability of his government to pay workers’ salaries from September, October, November and December in less than a record two week period was a huge relief.
The governor said it was in September 2014 that he had to call on workers to decide whether they wanted a staff reduction or payment of salaries according to available resources when the impact of the economic hardship in the country began to biter harder.
He said in July 2015, the new Federal Government which had been sworn in May, 2015, listened to some of the solutions proffered to the national revenue crisis.
Aregbesola said when the state got N34.9bn bailout loan in 2015, there were controversies on how to disburse the funds when some people insisted that the whole funds should be spent all at once.
“But I knew that with the magnitude of the economic crisis facing Nigeria, it would have been suicidal to expend the whole bailout loan at once without saving a portion of it which eventually bailed us out till around February this year,” Aregbesola said.
The governor recalled that this was what made necessary, the constitution of the state's Revenue Apportionment Committee headed by labour veteran Comrade Hassan Sunmonu which he said made it possible for the state to pay salaries till February of 2016.
He said the arrival of the Paris Club deductions refunds which made N11.7bn available to the state has brought some relief noting that the state would however need to intensify its efforts towards self-sustenance.
“We are grateful that our hardships are getting over giving us indications that the new year would be better.” he added.
The governor while expressing appreciation to workers who showed understanding, appealed to those who have not shown signs of understanding the trends.
He added, “LAUTECH lecturers have insisted they would not cooperate with the government despite their knowledge of the economic conditions we face. We appeal to them to accept our fate at the moment for the sake of the students’ future.”
He expressed optimism that by June this year, there are signs that the recession would come to an end.
While appealing to all stakeholders to look inward, Aregbesola charged traditional rulers promote agriculture in their respective domain just as he appealed to them to engage in vigorous campaigns for payment of taxes.
“We want to engage massively in agriculture. We want to aggressively grow cassava, maize, plantain, rice, soya beans and the existing cocoa which our people are already growing. It is now clear that those who are looking for free things will wait forever. It's certain that oil price can no longer return to its old rates and free money won't come again. If we don't want to continue to suffer this lack, farming is the only venture we must embark on.
He assured that the government would give financial aides to those interested in farming.
The governor also hinted that by 1st of February, this year, his government would enforce the use of the standard measures and scales for all commercial transactions as part of efforts to make commerce attractive in Osun.
“Whoever fails to use Osunwon Omoluabi will face the consequences.”
The Head of Service Mr. Sunday Owoeye, in his speech saluted the courage and commitment of the Osun workforce.
Owoeye, who said revenue generation should be a major focus of the workers in the new year, said the workers have shown commitment.
"I wish to acknowledge the sacrifice and endurance of Public Servants in the State in these trying times we are passing through. We have proved to the whole world our resilience in the face of unanticipated challenges such that when the going gets tough, the tough gets going!
"Whenever the history of the State will be written in future and the achievements of this sparkling Aregbesola Administration are enumerated, the indomitable and altruistic spirit with which the Public Servants weather the current storms shall definitely occupy a conspicuous space!
"I wish to charge every public servant to continue to support this administration in its drive towards self-sufficiency by being more proactive in revenue generation. The largest room in the world is the room for improvement and the road to success is always under construction ad infinitum!"
In his sermon, Dr. Isiaka Lawal of the College of Education Ilesa, advised civil servants to abide by the rules of their engagements noting that leakages of officially classified documents, no matter for what reason, contradicts civil service rules.

UPP chairman berates Buhari over economy

·          Describes President Buhari's administration as a failure
·        Promises that UPP’ll focus on restructuring in 2019
Chief Chekwas Okorie who is the chairman of the United Progressives Party (UPP) has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for the handling of the country’s economy.
Chief Chekwas Okorie, UPP National Chairman
Vanguard reports that Okorie spoke on Tuesday, January 3 when he received Ralph Uwazuruike who is the leader of the Biafra Independence Movement in Owerri, Imo state.
The UPP leader said Buhari apparently did not prepare for governance which was why he has been unable to manage the country well.

He said: “It is a very sad commentary that Nigerians are passing through very harsh times and this is principally midwifed by the fact that President Buhari did not prepare for governance before stepping into office.”
“From what we have seen so far, it appears that President Buhari’s primary motive was simply to win the presidential election”.
Okorie noted that so many government parastatals were underperforming and lamented that it took the president a long time to roll out his ministers.
“Another good example of the President’s bad approach to governance is the issue of the Niger Delta upheaval. He didn’t manage it well. He came on board with the jackboot mentality over the matter and of course, he failed”
He said his party will focus on restructuring in 2019. And lashed at Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo on how pensioners were being treated in the state.
“UPP will bring the recommendations of the recent National Conference to the front burner. Already, we have set up a committee to look at the document. UPP will make it an issue during the 2019 election campaign”
“Governor Rochas Okorocha is a very big embarrassment to Ndigbo. He has messed up Imo State. He is worried about the deafening lamentation of the citizenry and it does not appear that he wants to change his obnoxious style”.
“The way Chief Okorocha has been treating pensioners, to say the least, is most shocking. To Imo people, 2019 appears to be eternity. The worst thing that can happen is for any right thinking Imo citizen to vote for All Progressives Congress, APC, or any stooge Okorocha brings up.”

PDP helped Buhari become president, Lamido confesses

Alhaji Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa state, has reviewed the latest history of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership, its crisis and outcome of disagreement between its members -- becoming Muhammadu Buhari the president of Nigeria.
Alhaji Sule Lamido
Lamido, who spoke in his Bamaina hometown at the weekend on December 3-4, stated that all the leaders, including him, are to be blamed for the party’s troubles.
He also reiterated that the PDP remains the party about and for the people of Nigeria stressing that and it will always be beyond any personality.
On stability, reconciliation and crisis, Lamido said: "It is not about one’s own personality or one’s ego, but it is about this party called PDP which carries the Nigerian hope which was able to get Nigerians stabilised in spite of the vilification and propaganda and prepared the ground fully for Buhari to come in and become a president because if there is any great beneficiary of PDP in Nigeria, it is Buhari.
Between 1998 and 1999, there was no way Buhari could have gotten the opportunity to contest, he can’t contest I don’t mean to insult him, but it is simply a historical fact that all those that are now calling the shots, is all, thanks to PDP because the country has been stabilised and reconciled."
Why APC should thank PDP
"So, anybody in the villa or government Houses or wherever they are, who are now enjoying this APC thing are simply because PDP was able to restore the country and made it possible for them.
But today, no matter how big you are as a thief, if you go to APC, they would accept you, look at those going to APC in the last two to three weeks, these are people who are literally on trial by the EFCC.
Maybe because the PDP couldn’t stand up for them, that’s why they are going there or maybe APC has no qualms about fraud by accepting them with the intention of cleaning them,"  Lamido concluded.

Sule Lamido poised to replace Buhari as president

* Says only God can stop him from replacing President Buhari if he decides to run in 2019 general elections
* Accuses those in authority of persecuting him because of his ambition
* Urged leaders to understand the consequences for tyranny, abuse of human dignity and impunity
Sule Lamido, a former Jigawa State Governor, has declared that only God can stop him from replacing President Muhammadu Buhari if he decides to contest against him for the presidency in 2019 general election.
Former Governor Sule Lamido
According to The sun, Sule Lamido made this assertion on Sunday, January 1, after policemen were reportedly sent to stop the rally organized at Bamaina village of Birnin Kudu by youths in the area to urge him contest in 2019.
Lamido said: “The desperation by those in authorities of power today must know that the same God that have made Balewa, Ironsi, Gowon, Murtala, Shagari, Buhari, Babangida and Jonathan Presidents could do the same for me if Allah so wishes.
“All this coercion and intimidation was because of my aspiration and I must tell them that no matter what, if Allah has destined that I will be President, they cannot stop me or deter me because that will amount to fighting against the wish of God.
“Leaders should beware of the consequences that follow tyranny, impunity and abuse of human dignity.”
Lamido added: “I am their father and they are coming to greet me and you are saying they have to ask for permit, permit for what?
“All over this country I’ve never heard of a mutual gathering that requires one to ask for permit, even on Saturday, we were in Sokoto for a wedding where thousands of people attended or even naming ceremonies where hundreds attend, have you asked them to show their permit?, but because it’s Sule Lamido, whoever that is coming to see me must acquire a permit to do so”.
In his response to the youths, he said: “If your prayers for me to be the President of this country is the wish of Allah, let it be, for Allah is the One that made others like Jonathan, Tafawa Balewa, Obasanjo.”

Meanwhile, Lamido has reiterated that the PDP remains the party about and for the people of Nigeria, stressing that it will always be beyond any personality.

Police allegedly go against PDP supporters in Jigawa

* Ex-Gov Lamido gathers support ahead of 2019 presidential elections

* Rally to honour him reportedly scuttled by the police
* Arrests Lamido's supporters
The police in Jigawa state have reportedly arrested 148 supporters of former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa state who gathered to honour him.
Alhaji Sule Lamido.
Daily Trust reports that the supporters of the former governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were drawn from 27 local governments in the state.
Apart from their arrest on Saturday, December 31, 2016, the report said police officers mounted road blocks along the roads leading to Bamaina, the home town of the former governor.
This forced people to take other routes while the event later held at a private house of the former governor.
Lamido has been a major critic of the Muhammadu Buhari government and is touted to have a presidential ambition ahead of 2019.
The report added that Lamido, who spoke with journalists in his country home later that day, expressed shock at the action of the police.
He said: “I’ve never heard of a mutual gathering that requires one to ask for permit, even on Saturday we were in Sokoto for a wedding and nobody was asked to show his permit. But, since it is Sule Lamido, whoever is coming to see me must get permit.”

The report further said that the spokesperson for the police in Jigawa state, Abdul Jinjiri, said police officers were deployed to different parts of Birnin Kudu local government area and not just Bamaina following reports of a planned security breach.
“So far, 148 people in possession of dangerous weapons that include locally made revolver with live ammunition, Dane guns and other weapons have been arrested,” he said.

Oshiomhole may replace Oyegun as APC chairman

·       Planners tip Oyegun for choice consular appointment

The former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole may be the next national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Nation reports that the current chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, is being considered for an ambassadorial position by the presidency.
Oshiomhole, left, and Oyegun.
Odigie-Oyegun’s tenure as chairman expires in 2018 but some top people in the presidency are pushing for a “choice ambassadorial appointment for him”. This is to appreciate the role he played in the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections.
A source said: “From the look of things, Oyegun may get an ambassadorial posting which will make him to technically vacate office. They said Oyegun deserves a befitting appointment for leading an opposition party to defeat a ruling party.
“Some forces in the Presidency are looking forward to Oshiomhole as a respectable figure who can fit into the big shoes of Oyegun."
However, some APC leaders want him to complete his tenure in office instead of being “compensated.’
The source said his supporters are against the nomination which they see as a plot to remove the APC national chairman. His supporters see ambassadorial appointment for a politician as a “sort of exile”.
If he accepts the ambassadorial posting, Oshiomhole will take over from him.
Some APC governors want Oshiomhole to take over the position because of his antecedent as a labour leader.
Oshiomhole met President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed doors at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, January 3.
This was his first visit to the president since he handed over to Godwin Obaseki in November. His visit fueled speculations that he was being considered for a ministerial appointment.

However, Oshiomhole said he was just paying a courtesy visit to the president.
Recall that during Buhari’s two-day working visit to Benin City on November 7, he said if Oshiomole was allowed to leave politics shortly after his tenure as a state governor, it would result to wasting his energy.
He said: “It will be a pity to waste his energy by him retiring. I hope there will be a higher assignment for him to do more for the nation.”

Mega party: Anxiety as 3 APC governors visit PDP counterparts

*  Unease in the APC over the visit of some governors of the party to members of the opposition
* The visits are causing suspicion following talks of a new party
* Tambuwal’s spokesman dismisses hints of political undertone to visits of the APC governors to their PDP counterparts
There is disquiet in the APC over some governors’ visits to Governor Nyesom Wike and Akwa Ibom state governor, Udom Emmanuel, who are of the PDP.
Some presidency officials are said to be disturbed over the visit of some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike and Akwa Ibom state governor, Udom Emmanuel, who are of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Nation reports that the APC governors, who visited their PDP counterpart, are: Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto) and Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi).
The governors also jointly hosted Wike in Sokoto, an action that sent disquiet among APC members who are interpreting the visits as a major political plan was on.
Some APC leaders were even more surprised that that Tambuwal and Bagudu visited Wike before the last legislative election rerun in Rivers state, spending a day with him.
The two governors teamed up with Yari, who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), to spend Christmas in Akwa Ibom.
Governor Wike also reciprocated the visits last weekend when he went to Sokoto where he said at the Sultan’s palace that Niger Delta would not be part of any move to dismember Nigeria.
A source, who asked not to be named, spoke of the unease in the APC on the shuttles by Tambuwal and others to Rivers and Akwa Ibom states
He said: “Some of our leaders are uncomfortable with snippets from these trips."
“The timing of the first visit to Rivers State made some of our leaders to be suspicious. It was like paying a solidarity visit to Wike ahead of the Rivers State rerun elections.
“Some leaders have been suspecting that the three governors might be the arrowheads of a political realignment in the country.”
According to reports, the visits are causing suspicion because of the talks of a new party ahead of the next general elections, though, the direction and planners of the mega party remain unknown.

The source said a minister protested to the APC leadership in the northwest over the trips on Tuesday, December 3.
The source quoted the angry minister as saying: We heard what you people are planning.”
A party leader said: “Some of us have been angry with these governors because our members are going through hell in these states.
“There is nothing wrong in exchanging visits or comparing notes, but we saw the trips as missteps at a time we are seeking redress or justice for our members in the affected states.

“Of what use is an APC governor’s romance with a PDP governor in whose state APC members were attacked or where policemen were killed?”
However, Alhaji Imam Imam, the special adviser on media and publicity to the Governor Tambuwal has dismissed suggestions that the visits were for political reesons.
He said: “There is nothing political at all with all these shuttles. The commitment of the governor of Sokoto State to APC is not in doubt at all. Tambuwal is fully committed to APC. Our commitment to the President, the leadership of the party and all APC structures is unshaken and undiluted.
“We work within the confines of APC. Nobody should link us with 2019. During political season, we will engage in politicking. But this is a period of governance; we are now focused on governance.”

“Tambuwal believes in inter-state trade. So long as states cooperate among themselves, the potential for the nation’s economic growth is large. When we visited Rivers, we had discussion on youth empowerment and sports; when we visited Aba, Abia State, the governor sold the idea of marketing Sokoto leather to them. When we went to Kano for inspection of projects, we interacted with some businessmen and one of them is now establishing a fertilizer plant in Sokoto.”
