Oseme charges vigilante group on peace, development

·        Urges Okada riders to support Okowa's Govt
It was a time of ovation in Aniocha North Community when the long lasting leadership tussle among the Aniocha North Vigilante Group was resolved by the Chairman, Aniocha North Local Government Area Hon. Chuks Oseme.
Hon. Chuks Oseme being decorated Patron
of Ugboba youths.

Oseme who resolved the leadership tussle at the Ugboba community when he played host to the Aniocha North Vigilante group on 31 December, 2016, to proffer solution on the security matters in the communities in 2017.
According to the chairman, the leadership of the group should be rotational so that peace will reign among the group in order to achieve the purpose for which it was set up.
"What i want is peace in Aniocha North and i want to use this opportunity to resolve this matter once and for all so that in 2017 all hands must be on deck to ensure that we maintain peace and order in the council area," he stressed
While he appealed to the new leadership of the vigilante group to carry everybody along, Oseme admonished the group that synergy among themselves  and other security agents would help in curbing crime effectively in the area.
He said " there should be synergy among you, vigilante in Issele-uku should be able to communicate with vigilante in Onicha-ugbo, Ukwu-Nzu, Onicha-Olona or Ugboba. With this synergy, the job will be easy  for all of us and therefore perpetrators of evil will not have their ways"
He lamented the recent tragedy that struck Idumuje-Ugboko where a family was murder in cool blood.

Similarly, Oseme urged Okoda Riders Association in the area to support the government of Governor Ifeanyi  Okowa and it's S.M.A.R.T agenda, appealing to them to be law abiding citizen and give peace a chance while they do their daily businesses
" I also decided to host you people because i know that Okada is a very important business because it has reduced unemployment in the council area and the state at large. Therefore, we won't play with you people, most of you are graduates and our governor, Okowa has rolled out many programmes, so if it has not come to you, be patient in no distant time it will get to you," Oseme assured
The highpoint of the occasion was the decoration of Chuks Oseme as a Patron Ugboba Youth by the Ugboba youth president, Comrade Kanfunakwu Augustin

Why Ibori’s release was celebrated

                                                                                                                     ANALYSIS
Chief James Ibori

By Tony Eluemunor

Mr. Simon Kolawole’s “The Welcome Party for Ibori”(THISDAY Sunday 25th December 2016), broached several topics and reached several wrong conclusions as he condemned the widespread celebrations when Ibori exited UK jail. I’ll face the ex-convict case now and tackle the others later. Kolawole wrote: “The 1995 conviction by an Abuja area court was a thriller. The name of the convict was James Onanefe Ibori. In 2004, he denied being the same person and court records would soon be blurred. The judge who passed the sentence identified him as the convict. But all the way to the Supreme Court, our judiciary ruled that it must be another James Onanefe Ibori.

My reply: It was disingenuous for Kolawole to reduce a most complicated suit to a simple matter that should have totally depended on the words of a lay judge of a “magistrate court” who had actually been arrested by the Police for doctoring another person’s conviction to look like  Ibori’s.

As the allegation that Ibori was convicted in 1995 emerged three weeks after the Peoples Democratic Party convention, January 2003, on which Kolawole posited that Ibori was among the PDP Governors opposed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s re-election, Ibori petitioned the President that as he was never arraigned in that court, a fake conviction was in circulation and prayed that the perpetrators be fished out and punished. Obasanjo sent the petition to the Police and a controversial case was in full swing! So from day one Ibori denied that he was never tried in that court!

Late Chief Gani Fawenhinmi represented the plaintiffs, and his only witness, Alhaji Awwal Yusuf, the lay judge at the Bwari Upper Area Court in 1995, said “I have no doubt in my mind that it was James Onanefe Ibori that was convicted on Case number CR-81-95”.

On Monday July 5, 2004, Milton Paul Ohwovoriole (SAN) (for Ibori) cross-examined Yusuf: “If you see exhibit C (the record of your court) you will be able to recognize it.”
Yusuf: “Yes”. Ohwovoriole bid him read out the court records from page 441. Yusuf complied: “CR-81-95 was registered 28/9/95 as Commissioner of Police versus Shuaibu Anyebe of Security, Bwari. The next date was 5/10/95 in CR-83-95. The next date again is October 13 with CR -84-95. The prosecutor was Sabo of Kawu. The next is 17/10/95, in CR -85-95, involving Mallam Adamu Mohammed of Lugbe village. Next is 19/10/95, CR-86-95, Barau Ayade versus Dogonyaro Akau, next is 20/10/95, in CR- 87-95, involving Elambu Auta versus Danjuma Medeji and Yerima Akusu. The complaint was enticement.”

So, from Yusuf’s own court records with no alterations, and read out by Yusuf himself, Ibori’s name wasn’t in any First Information Report (FIR).  So, how did two judgments from that court, with same exact number; CR-81-95 – Commissioner of Police versus Shuabu Anyebe, and Police Commissioner versus Ibori emerge?  One of them must be forged.

Judge Hussein Mukhtar of Abuja High Court Five, ruled that the judgment was a crude forgery, and itemized 25 contradictions against Yusuf.  The Appeal Court believed him.
Justice Dahiru Musdapher’s  lead Supreme Court judgment noted: “The appellants also pleaded as per paragraphs 11,13,14 and 15… of their statement of claims as follows:“11. At the time of his conviction on the 28/9/1995 James Onanefe Ibori now Governor of Delta State, was a sub-contractor to SPIBAT Nigeria Ltd at Lower Usuma Dam near Bwari at the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. The appellants unfortunately led no evidence in proof of these averments.

Both lower courts (High and Appeal courts) considered the pleadings and the evidence led by the plaintiffs and rightly came to the conclusion that they failed to prove the identity of the convict aforesaid”.
Musdapher noted: “3. The pages in the proceedings in the record book are not continuous as would be expected, but is found on many pages on unused lines or remnants of pages covering proceedings of several days”.

This is the most telling sign that the judgment was cooked up.  In the notebook where the judge wrote his decision, he began from the middle of a page beneath the entry of another judgment instead of following the normal practice of starting on a fresh page. Worse still, at the end of that page he skipped about ten pages before he continued his judgement on the so-called Ibori case. In the intervening pages, he had written other judgments. The result was that the continuation of the Ibori judgement came after the judgments he supposedly delivered in October 1995. Yet, he allegedly decided the Ibori case on September 28. And Kolawole wants us to swear by this man’s testimony! Why could he not just write on continuous pages if it was not forged?

Justice Musdapher noted: “(c) No evidence of the complainant”.
But unlike the Anyebe case where the complainant made a statement to the Police, there was no statement from any complainant on the Ibori case, and not a page was missing from the Police Complaint Book of the Bwari Police station or the Police Post at Lower Usuma Dam.

Musdapher: “(d) No evidence of the Police officer who received the complaint, the Investigating Police Officer, the Prosecutor, etc”.  Could Yusuf, Islamic studies graduate who had been in the Education Department of Niger State until 1990 when he transferred his services to FCT as an Upper Area Court (magistrate court equivalent in the South), had by 2003 known more about trials than Fawehinmi? If the answer is no, then why did Fawehinmi fail to call the Police Commissioner, the Court Registrar, the other Judge, the Police Prosecutor, etc, as witnesses, even after Yusuf had mentioned them?

As the Ibori case was not reported to a police station, it had no complainant, was never investigated or brought to court by any police officer. This is why the case has no First Information Report (FIR) number.  Yes, Yusuf had named one Corporal Sunday Musa as the person who brought the FIR to his court but testified in Delta State Electoral Tribunal, Asaba, that he never investigated any Ibori case; but that he investigated the Anyebe case!

On page 294 of the Record of Appeal, Awwal Yusuf, the Bwari court lay judge, said: 1; “Amongst the six FIRs, five of the accused persons pleaded guilty” and were convicted except Monica Lewinsky (that is no misprint- the American lady linked with Bill Clinton). On page 296 Yusuf continued: iii: “All the FIRs brought that day were registered. IV: I know the FIR No. of Shuaibu Anyebe; it was CR-81-95. The six FIRs brought were registered. It is not correct to say that only five were registered. It is not correct that it was Shuaibu Anyebe that was convicted on the FIR No. CR-81-95” only to say, (page 312) “the case of Commissioner of Police Versus James Ibori was not registered that day but it exists.” Contradictions galore!

Yet, Kolawole made it look as if Ibori was accused of theft and not “criminal negligence” as Anybe was also accused. That was a lie! The charge was that Ibori was a sub-contractor to SPIBAT construction firm when “workers under him stole N110 million worth of “zinc asbestos” in 1995? SPIBAT constructed the Lower Usuma Dam from 1981 to 84 and was gone by the turn of that decade.  And official Abuja Water Board records show that the Abuja dam started supplying water to the FCT in 1987. So, no construction was happening there by 1995!

There was another devilish tale from Yusuf himself in his 7/2/03 final Police Statement that the Usuma Lower Dam Veterinary building was to be roofed with the 55,000 bundles of “zinc asbestos” That is the quantity of zinc worth N110m at the 1995 rate of N2,000 per bundle.

When we remember that while the Police dilly-dallied, a suit was filled seeking:  “A declaration that the Chief James Onanefe Ibori, by virtue of his conviction and sentence in Case No. CR/81/95 is not qualified to carry the (PDP’s) flag as its Gubernatorial candidate in the 2003 elections within the meaning of sections 182 (1) (e) of the 1999 constitution”, it becomes plain that it was a politically motivated case.

So, the forgery was to stop Ibori’s 2003 re-election as Delta State Governor.  Kolawole forgot that Segun Adeniyi and Cletus Akwaya of THISDAY newspaper then visited Shuaibu Anyebe, recorded him on tape and snapped pictures with him; and obtained the receipt with which he paid his fine in lieu of going to jail for case number CR-81-95. When this first attempt to stop Ibori politically failed, others continued until Ibori was forced to flee Nigeria to save his endangered life. The Niger Delta people and other Ibori well-wishers know Ibori faced political persecution and not prosecution, they know about the trumped up charges against him such as this ex-convict case. So they celebrate even the mere fact that he is alive today, very lustily and without apologies.

Governor Okowa

Gov. Okowa, in a goodwill message on Saturday in Asaba, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu, reiterated his administration’s determination to increase the tempo of service delivery and infrastructural development in the new year..
The Statement read: "With a deep sense of profound gratitude to God almighty, I welcome you all to a brand new year 2017. I join you all in giving profuse thanks to God almighty for His guidance and protection all through the preceding year, 2016.
"I appreciate immensely the unalloyed, support and cooperation that our administration has enjoyed from Deltans, which has been our source of strength and courage. Buhari: I opposed devaluation in 1984 and was overthrown

President Muhammadu Buhari has once against stated his resolve to oppose the devaluation of the naira and increase in fuel price.
He was speaking in Abuja on Friday night at the 2016 regimental dinner organised by the presidential brigade of guards.
President Buhari
The annual event is organised to mark the end of drilling year of the commission – and it is also an opportunity for officers to “mingle” with their commanders.‎
Buhari suggested that his resistance to devaluation and fuel price increase during his time as military head of state in 1984-85 led to his overthrow.
“I have resisted the devaluation of the naira, increase of the petroleum products, among others,” he told the soldiers and officers.
“When I was military head of state, I rejected similar advice by the IMF and World Bank to devalue the naira.
“I refused and gave my reasons and the next thing I knew I was removed and detained for three and half years.
“As a civilian president, I will do my best and I’m telling you all these because you are part of the leadership of this great country and God willing we will remain great.”
Although Buhari has consistently said he would not devalue the naira, the national currency now exchanges for over N300 to $1 officially, and N495/$1 in the black market.
It was officially N197/$1 when Buhari assumed office in May 2015.
The 2017 budget is predicated on N305/$1 which is considered to be “more realistic”.
The pump price of petrol has also increased from N86.50k per litre to N145 since then.

Ex-CBN director to Buhari: Don’t let Nigeria become Zimbabwe

Akpan Ekpo, a former director of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has warned the current administration not to allow the economic situation deteriorate to the level of Zimbabwe.
President Buhari

In an interview with TheCable at Washington, Akpan said even Sani Abacha, the late military dictator, allowed experts to run the economy.
Lamenting over the situation when non-professionals are in charge of key ministries, Ekpo said the government of President Muhammadu Buhari needs the assistance of a strong economic management team.
“If you look at Nigeria’s economic history in the last 56 years, there are some episodes where you could say they appointed technocrats to manage the economy,” he said.
“But since 1999, there have been problem because politics dominated the economy.
“The military, for some reasons were able to recruit some technocrats. I can tell you that everything about the Nigerian economy has been researched, documented and written about, before 1999. They are on shelves.
“But when 1999 came, in fairness to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, he tried in putting together experts to macro-manage the economy. He brought people who were good. Then, he had an economic team that constituted mainly of experts.
“Those experts co-opted other experts to look at the economy. I think it continued up to the time late president Yar’Adua. During Yar’Adua’s tenure, I was a member of the team.”

I TOLD OKONJO-IWEALA SHE WAS MAKING A MISTAKE

“After Yar’Adua it continued, but with an error. I even told Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala that it was a mistake to have an economic management team that included private sector players and government players same time. You don’t do that.
“You have a different forum where you meet businessmen and a different forum where the economic management team meet. This is because when you are practicing capitalism, the government tries to surprise the private sector, while the private sector tries to predict the government.
“If you put all of them in one room and government brings out a policy, they are rational to exploit it. For example, if there is a policy on cement, a private sector person in the economic management team would exploit it easily. So, you make life very easy for them to make money.”

UNLIKE BUHARI, ABACHA ALLOWED EXPERTS RUN THE ECONOMY

On the current administration, Ekpo said: “This government is even not the same. What they have now is a ministerial team. But they invite experts on ad hoc basis. I have attended two of such meetings.
“But what they need is a strong economic management team. Every country needs intellectuals to assist. So, we need a strong economic management team to assist government.
“More so, when some people running the key ministries are not in the profession that you need to look at the economy. They are either core politicians who have not been involved in running an economy for a long time.
“I will give you an example. During the tenure of late General Sani Abacha, he appointed Chief Anthony Ani as minister of finance. But Anthony said he is an accountant and that he does not think he has what it took to run the economy alone.
“So, Abacha approved for him a ministerial advisory committee. He brought in only economics and a lawyer to drive the process during that process. Go and look at the macro-fundamentals at that period. And there was a link between the ministerial advisory committee and the national economic team headed by Prof. Sam Aluko.
“So, even Abacha who was a dictator left the economy to be ran by experts and the economy did well then. I was involved. In fact, I was the chairman of that ministerial committee in the ministry of finance for four years. We ran the economy.”

IF RECESSION CONTINUES, NIGERIA MAY END UP LIKE ZIMBABWE

Ekpo, who was vice-chancellor at the University of Uyo, criticised the current foreign exchange policy of the CBN, saying it encourages round-tripping.
“You can see that  the misalignment between the interbank and parallel market rates is too much. When I last check, government was still the greatest supplier of foreign exchange, and they give it to the banks to sell.
“Any bank official would be rational and want to round trip. So, the gap is just too much. And that is going to affect foreign direct investments. What you will have is hot money.
“So, when there is a recession, you adopt what is called economic nationalism. So, let’s pray that the economic recession does not continue for a long time, because if that happens and we enter into a depression, we may just be like Zimbabwe or Venezuela.”

CAN declares national day of mourning over Kaduna killings

·         Decries genocide against Christians
·         Chides Buhari, security agencies for deliberate slumber
·         Onslaught against Christians by Islamic fundamentalists disguising as Fulani herdsmen under the watch of Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and President Muhammadu Buhari has reached an alarming stage

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has asked Christians in the country and in the Diaspora to wear black clothes to mourn those killed in Southern Kaduna.
The association also faulted the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari on the development, alleging that he has endorsed the killings of Christians.
President Buhari
Musa Asake, general secretary of CAN, said this in a statement.
“The ongoing silence over the ongoing genocide in Kaduna in the last few weeks speaks volume over perceived official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts,” Asake said.
“In view of the present predicament, the president of CAN has directed that Sunday, January 8, 2017, should be declared a national day of mourning by Christians including those in the Diaspora.
“We are to pray fervently for our southern Kaduna brothers and sisters who are victims of these wanton killings and also for the peace of our dear country, Nigeria. Therefore all Christians are to dress in the mourning attire black dresses in all our church services on January 8, 2017.
“We are to pray that God who delivered the Jews from Haman should deliver Christians from the Hamans in Nigeria. An injustice to one is an injustice to all.”
CAN asked Nigerians to speak up against the “ethnic and religious cleansing to wake up the Nigerian security agencies from their deliberate slumber to carry out their responsibility.”
The association said the Christians in Nigeria have been persecuted since 2009.
“Though the church in Nigeria, since 2009, has been subjected to a systematic genocide and persecution through the instrumentality of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, leading to the killings of thousands of Christians and destruction of hundreds of churches, and over 50,000 houses, the current unprecedented.”
“While we commend President Buhari for waging war against Boko Haram since his assumption of office, his silence over the ongoing genocide in the last few weeks speaks volume over the perceived official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts.”

Jaunty, Ojeah, Diai extol traditional society, urge support for Obi Ezeagwuna II

The case has been made for the people of Issele-Uku to unflinchingly support the new monarch, Obi Nduka Ezeagwuna II as he commences his reign as the Obi of Issele-Uku.
Speaking at the coronation ground as the Obi received his staff of office from government, former Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area, Hon. Jaunty Okwudi said the coronation was significant a people must have a ruler in their community, just as it happened in the Bible when Israel asked for a king and God gave them one.
He advised the people of Issele-Uku recognize and respect the new king by giving him their support to enable him achieve successful ruler ship.
Speaking in the same vein, Prince Ojeah Joseph a security personnel who is also an indigene of Issele-Uku , said the coronation of Obi Ezeagwuna II is a mark of new beginning for the people of Issele-Uku as it is also an indication of God’s mercy to witness the event.
“My message for the people of Issele-Uku is that they should honour the stool and support the obi with all sense of godliness for the progress of the kingdom and its people.”
For Architect Charles Diai, the coronation is a good event. He said: “It is a good event for promoting our culture and showcasing the very essence of who we are as a people, where we came from and where we are going.”
Urging that the traditional institution should be given the pride of place, Diai said the kingship institution is a repository of the people’s culture. If we give it the pride of place in the country, it has the potential of filling the gap where crime has taken over,” he said.

Diai therefore called for a situation in the country that will make development to start from the local governments. “Start Development from the bottom; the local government is the bottom,” he contended.   He urged the people of Issele-Uku to give the kingship its pride of place.
