The Delta State Government has
inaugurated the State Drugs Control Committee (SDCC), with a charge to members
to ensure that illicit drug activities were totally eradicated in the
state.
Inaugurating the Committee, the
Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Festus Ovie Agas, noted that drug abuse
was a universal problem that cut across all age brackets and stressed the
need for the state to collaborate with stakeholders in the fight against the
threat.
He expressed hope that the
Committee would do its best to make Delta state drugs free.
Earlier in his address, the state
Commander of National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mr. Dennis Obiefule,
noted that the problem of illicit drugs cultivation/manufacturing,
trafficking and abuse, have very dire consequences to any state that fails
to address these problems because of the threat they pose to the society.
While stressing the need to appeal
to the conscience of the good people of the state to discourage these
"merchants of death", Mr. Obiefule expressed the need to collaborate
in the campaign for a drug free Delta state so that together we will attain a
drug free society.
He therefore thanked the state
Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for approving the establishment of the
Committee. Membership of the Committee was drawn from the Nigerian Prisons,
Police, SACA, Pharmaceutical Council, FRSC, NSCDC, Ministry of Education, and
Health amongst others.
