At about some minutes pass 3.00pm on
Sunday 5th February, 2017, His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor
of Delta State visited Chudes Girls Model School, Sapele to see the damage done
to the hostel that was gutted on fire the day before.
In his entourage was the Rt. Hon.
Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Monday Owhigho
Igbuya, Chief Amori, Hon. Odebala, the Chairman, Sapele Local Government and a
host of others.
It was gathered that at about 5.00am on
Saturday, 4th February, an alarm was raised that the hostel was on fire, the
cause was linked to power surge from electricity supply, when the students were
still sleeping at this time, but for the timely intervention of one Mrs. Rose
Ajeroh who was sleeping with the students at the hostel, the story would have
been different.
It was Mrs. Ajeroh that cleverly
opened the door to the hostel and started calling all the students to come out.
The Matron of the School,
Mrs. Kokoricha, was also instrumental to the rescue of a student that was still
sleeping despite the inferno, for she risked her life and entered the burning
hostel to get the student out.
Speaking at the inspection visit,
The Governor thanked God Almighty that no live was lost. He promised to put the
hostel back in order and to make improvement on the infrastructures in the
College.
Mrs. Ajeroh who is one of the
beneficiaries of the Federal government alleviation programme, only resume duty
last week and since she cannot be coming from Abraka to Sapele on a daily
basis, decide to put up with the students at the hostel and became the one that
was used to rescue the students.
The Governor appreciated the role
she played in the whole scenario, and she was given gift items in kind and cash
by well meaning individuals.
Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya,
The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, gave donations of 100 sleeping
foams and N100, 000, Toiletries and beverages.
Rt. Hon. Igbuya equally thanked God
that no life was lost and said the burnt hostel will be rebuilt.
As at the time of filing this
report, two classrooms has been converted to temporary hostels for the
students.
