Ika people protest poor power supply, over billing by BEDC

Dissatisfaction, frustration, anger, grievances were on display following a peaceful protest against poor electricity supply in Ika land spear headed by Ika landlords and landladies Association

The protest which commenced in the early hours of Tuesday witnessed a massive turn out of residents as activities in the area was at standstill.

Offices, markets, shops were closed as protesters who were armed with placards and green leaves headed to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company office located along college of education road.

In statement made available to newsmen signed by the duo of Vincent Arimokwu and Augustine Ogbaigbena, President and Secretary respectively noted that the protest became necessary in view of poor electricity supply despite the presence of electricity step-down in the area.

They frowned against the overbilling of residents without reading of meters and non supply of the approved pre paid metros even after some customers have paid for them, adding that they disconnect people's lines and cart away their cables and are allegedly sell same to customers upon payment of reconnection fee.

They maintained that they shall no longer be made to pay for any vandalized equipment also paying for services not rendered should stopped forthwith.

Our effort to speak with the management of BEDC was fruitless as the office was under lock and key.

However, the president of landlord and landladies Association siad they met with the  management and were told that their petitions will be forwarded to their headquarters in Benin but quickly added that after a while if issues raised remain unresolved they will react accordingly.
