The Court of Appeal sitting in
Abuja Monday morning quashed the order of
the Code of Conduct Tribunal which issued the bench warrant for the arrest of
the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, by latest today.
The Tribunal had on Friday issued the order for Saraki’s
arrest for failing to honour its invitation.
The Chairman of the Tribunal,
Justice Danladi Umar, had directed the Inspector General of Police, Solomon
Arase, to effect the arrest of Saraki and produce him before the Tribunal.
Reacting to the order to get
him arrested, Senator Saraki had insinuated political vendetta as the reason
for the order and an attempt by the Presidency to cow the senate.
This claim was however refuted
by the Presidency in a statement issued yesterday that the trial was purely at
the instance of the judiciary and that the Presidency and President Muhammadu
Buhari in particular should not be drafted into the whole process.
Meanwhile as at Sunday, the police said it was yet to
receive official communication from the Tribunal for Saraki’s arrest.
It was however gathered that in
order to avoid possible arrest before Monday in his private house in Abuja,
Senator Saraki had moved to the official quarters of the Senate President by
Sunday.
The Code of Conduct Tribunal as
at Monday morning was, however, awaiting the arrival of Saraki for the trial
proceedings Monday morning to answer summons served on him.
It was gathered that rather
than bringing the Senate President as directed by the Tribunal, the Police
maintained heavy security around the trial venue.
