The matter of the embattled Chairman of Ndokwa East Local
Government Chairman, Mrs. Nkechi Chukwurah took a plunge for the worse Thursday,
when the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) in a unanimous resolution
suspended the chairman for three months from office.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect was sequel to a
motion moved by Hon. Azuka Azaka (Ndokwa West), and seconded by Hon. Okoh
Festus Chukwuyem (Ika South), is to enable the House Committee on Local
Government and Chieftaincy Affairs carry out the mandate of the House to
thoroughly investigate the allegations made against the Chairman.
Hon. Azaka’s motion reads: “Sequel to the impeachment notice
forwarded to this House by 12 councilors out of 15 councilors of Ndokwa East
Legislative arm against Mrs. Nkechi Chukwurah, the chairman, Ndokwa East Local
Government Council, in line with section 31 of Delta State Local Government Law
2015 as amended, I move that this honourable House suspend Mrs. Nkechi
Chukwurah , the chairman, Ndokwa East Local Government for a period three
months with immediate effect, while the Vice Chairman, takes over as acting
chairman as this will ensure the maintenance of peace and order in the local
government, and allow the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs
carry out a thorough investigation into the issue.”
Following the unanimous voice vote in support of the
suspension, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya declared that the “ayes have it”,
adding: “”The Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government, Mrs. Nkechi Chukwurah
is hereby suspended for three months with immediate effect. She should hand
over to the vice chairman who takes charge of the Council as acting Chairman.”
It is recalled that there has been no love lost between Mrs.
Chukwurah and the councilors that culminated in the councilors forwarding an
impeachment notice against the chairman to the House of Assembly.
Top on the list of many allegations against the Chairman is
misappropriation of funds and gross misconduct. The councilors alleged that
while they have no chairs in their legislative chambers but had to make do with
sitting on plastic chairs, Mrs. Chukwurah as chairman was renovating her office
with N14 million.
