Delta state Government has set up a panel of commissioners
to look into the stalled multi-billion naira Independent Power Plant (IPP) at
Oghara, Commissioner for Energy, Barrister Newworld Safugha has disclosed.
The commissioner who was responding to a reporter’s question
at the on-going Ministerial Press briefing at the Unity Hall, Government House,
Asaba said the committee headed by himself also has the commissioner for
justice and Attorney-general, and the commissioner for finance as members. “We
are to looking into the IPP matter, and as soon as we conclude our assignment
and report to the state government Deltans will be briefed,” Safugha said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Justice and
Attorney-General, Barrister Peter Mrakpor in answer to another question said there
was no demand made by the contractor of the IPP project for the payment of
money owed him on the project. He said: “There is no demand for money owed on
the IPP project. Davnotch said we should go for arbitration. We have interfaced
and we are doing mediation.”
In a related development, the energy commissioner lamented
that Benin Electricity Distribution Company has shortchange the state by not providing
it with the required 110 mega watts of power for the state. “But what BEDC is distributing
is only 100 mega watts.
Barrister Safugha also announced that so far, the state
government has undertaken a total of 25 power supply projects since May 29,
2015 at a total cost of N1,122,988,383.
