Media, only hope of democracy, says Expert

A media expert, Mr Wale Olayemi, has described the media as the only hope for the sustenance and promotion of democracy in the country.
The expert said this on Tuesday, 29/11/2016 in Osogbo that the display of professionalism in the practice of journalism makes freedom of expression the good that helps the people to benefit from other goods.
He emphasized the fundamental obligation of the press to the advancement and survival of democracy as a form of government.
He said the role of the media in a democratic environment was akin to that of a Referee on the pitch, who never partake in the game but moderate the activities of the players and the spectators alike.
“The only way freedom of expression in a democracy can serve as a good that brings about other goods is by displaying high level of professionalism by media practitioners.
“They are expected to play the role of neutrality and impartiality in the same vein a Referee discharges his duty on the pitch.
“Of course, the indispensability of the media contribution to the good of humanity continued to play out in the level of attention given to victims of the humanitarian catastrophe as a result of media coverage,’’ he stressed.
Olayemi added that the new media accommodates amalgam of arm-chair journalists, its unique benefit of speed and accuracy make it the best that has happened to the profession.
He enjoined journalists to actively make use of the social media objectively to keep the general public abreast of the happenings in the society.
