Labour Party’s only Senator, Omo-Agege, defects to APC

The only Senator elected under the platform of the Labour Party (LP) in the 8th National Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-agege, has officially announced his intention to dump his party.
Omo-Agege, who is representing the people of Delta Central Senatorial District, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), at the resumed plenary, on Tuesday.
The Senator cited leadership tussle currently bedeviling the Labour Party, as reason for his defection.
With the defection of Omo-agege, the rank of APC Senators has increased to 66, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is coming behind with 42 Senators.
The Senator while formally notifying the Senate members on his decision, revealed why he has left the LP for the APC.
He told the senate: “Mr. President, in response to the unfounded accusations, threats, and libellous allegations arising from irreconcilable divisions in the national leadership (National Working Committee/National Executive Council) of Labour Party (LP) and consequent legal disputations between the opposing factions which have rendered the administration of the Party ineffective; and having regards to section 68(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), may I humbly notify Your Excellency Mr. Senate President and my Colleagues of my decision to switch my party membership from Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the Senator told the Senate today.
“Mr. President; distinguished colleagues, my decision to leave the LP for the APC is overwhelmingly supported by leaders and constituents of my Senatorial District, considering the troubling facts of the divisions within the national leadership of LP; with Comrade Bobo Atare Adou and Alhaji Abdukadir Salam now simultaneously laying claim to the national leadership of LP.
“While assuring Mr. President of my highest esteem, be further assured of my total commitment to this 8th Senate’s Legislative Agenda under your calm and steady leadership and absolute support for the APC Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari,” the Senator concluded.
There has, however, been no reaction from the Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
