NUT strike: Policemen for Delta State schools


 Police men will now be posted to secondary schools in Delta State in compliance with the request of the Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie.

Obviously reacting to the strike action embarked upon by teachers in the State, the Commissioner during a visit to the Ughelli Area Commander ACP Usman Ndambo to brief him on the on-going face- off between the state Government and members of NUT, he appealed to him to post security men to all the secondary schools in Ughelli North Local Government, stressing that the strike by secondary school teachers was uncalled for since they have all been paid.

 The Area Commander who assured the Commissioner of his readiness to arrest and prosecute anyone disrupting academic activities in secondary schools said he had already been briefed by the commissioner of police on the issue.

ACP Ndambo said his men will be duly posted to all schools in Ughelli North and anyone found disrupting academic activities would be prosecuted.
The visit was part of the commissioner’s effort to monitor teachers’ compliance with his directive to return to classrooms. At Ughelli North on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, Ebie directed teachers and students of Secondary Schools in the local government to resume normal academic activities.
 The Commissioner gave this directive at Otovwodo Grammar School, Ughelli while monitoring Schools in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

He explained to the teachers of Otovwodo and Afiesere Grammar Schools that despite the harsh economic condition of the country, the State Governor has made concerted effort to ensure that secondary school teachers’ salaries were paid up to date, stressing that Delta State has the highest wage bill in the country.

He explained further that other issues such as inter cadre transfer and promotion raised by NUT, were matters affecting few individuals which the state Government was ready to release in gradual process.

The commissioner advised teachers and students in the secondary schools to come to school and assured them that Government would do everything to protect them. Nobody has the right to close down Government school and nobody has the right to harass or molest you he stressed.
  
The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Hon. Kenneth Kesiena Ibru who went round with the commissioner appealed to secondary schools teachers in Ughelli North comply with the state Government directive.

Earlier, members of NUT were at Otovwodo Grammar School to enforce the directive of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to its members to keep away from classrooms until the state government meets the 10-point demands of teachers n the state
