Osinbajo swears in Onnoghen as 17th CJN

The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, this morning, Tuesday, March 7, 2017 inaugurated Justice Walter Onnoghen as the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The swearing-in ceremony held inside the Council Chambers of Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja with the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki; former CJNs members of the Federal Executive Council; Justices of the Supreme Court and his family members present.

Osinbajo also decorated Onnoghen with the second highest national honours of the Grand Commander of Order of the Niger
The acting president said he spoke with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, March 6 and the president sent his good wishes to the CJN.
In his remarks, Onnoghen promised to lead the judiciary and ensure the independence of the arm of government.
He urged all to adhere strictly to the rule of law and solicited the continued cooperation from all the Justices of the Supreme Court.
The Presidency had in February, confirmed that the Acting President had sent Onnoghen’s nomination to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently on extended medical vacation in London had on November 10, 2016 inaugurated Onnoghen as acting CJN following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed at the attainment of the mandatory 70 years retirement age.
Onnoghen was born in 1950 at Okurike, Biase Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State, and was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2005 (12 years ago).
