The speculated floods for which people living around the
coastal areas have been consistently warned to evacuate and move to safe areas
have now arrived in Delta state, claiming Tuesday the life of an 11 year- old girl who
drowned in the floods at Okpai.
Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Uka, with who were
the Commissioner for Higher Education, Mr. Jude Sinebe, the Executive Secretary
of the scholarship Board, Comrade Elijah Ologe and the Director of Information,
Mr. Paul Osahon, made this known Tuesday while briefing journalists on
decisions taken at the State Executive Council meeting, saying that the flood
is now in no fewer than six local government areas.
He identified the local governments currently affected by
the floods to include Ndokwa East, Oshimili South, Burutu, Ughelli South,
Patani and Bomadi. He said persons already displaced by the flood are being
relocated to safe locations within the affected local governments.
“The governor is taking the flood issue very seriously,” Uka
said, pointing out that necessary facilities are being put in place by the
committee put in place to manage the flood problem, and make the designated
centres for the rehabilitation of displaced persons comfortable and habitable. “Security,
sanitary and feeding of the displaced persons will not be an issue at the
centres,” Ukah said.
He said in answer to question that men of the security
agencies have been drafted to the centres, adding that with security on the
ground it will help to check incidences of rape and attacks on flood disaster
victims. “Our desire is to save lives,” Uka said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner announced that trailers that
parked by the Asaba International Airport, have been cleared, and that Governor
Ifeanyi Okowa has directed that trailers cannot be accommodated there. He said
investigation is still going on to establish the ownership of the disputed
land.
