The National Working
Committee (NWC) of the Pepoles Demicratic Party (PDP) said thorough
implementation of the Sen. Ike Ekweremadu-led Committe's report was the panacea
to the challenges confronting the Party.
The acting National
Chairman of PDP, Chief Uche Secondus, made the observation at the party's 67th
National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday in Abuja.
The News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NEC meeting was the first since the conclusion
of the 2015 general elections in April.
Secondus said what the
PDP needed was the implementation of the road map presented to it by the
Ekweremadu-led committee.
"We have come to a
critical juncture in the life of PDP and the NWC under my leadership is
determined to drive the process of re-invention that would ultimately return
the party’s lost glory.
"Against this
background, we have adopted the recommendations of the Ekweremadu committee as
a veritable road map for this process of rejuvenation.
" We call on all to
give it their support.
"There are far
reaching recommendations that touch on the soul of the party and her potential
to re-invent itself.
Secondus said that now
that the report was before the NEC, the process of consultation had started.
He said that the PDP
brand was still dear to the hearts of majority of Nigerians because it still
remained the only national party that articulates the interests of Nigerians.
"All we need is
focus at this time and the co-operation of all to reposition it for greater
heights," Secondus said.
He also stressed the need
for party members to be more focused and united in order to be effective in
their pursuits.
He called on the federal
government to come up with strategic policies on the development pf the
nation's of economy.
In his remarks,
Ekweremadu, who is the Deputy President of the Senate, said that PDP would
continue to nurture the country's democracy which it had laid the foundation.
He described PDP as the
greatest asssts of Nigeria's democracy.
"As poeple, as a
party, as Nigerians we must come together and ensure that our democracy
survives,'' Ekweremadu said.
In his remarks, the
Chairman of PDP Governors Forum, Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, said that the
fact that PDP conceded defeat in the 2015 election did not make the elections
the best in the history of Nigeria elections.
Mimiko said that the fact
about the elections would be revealed after the conclusion of the forensic
review of the elections.
Reading the meeting's
Communique, the party's Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said that the
NEC members had adopted the Ekweremadu-led report.
Metuh added that after
thorough consideration of the report, NEC approved that the party should zone
its 2019 presidential candidate to the north to enhance its electoral chances.
Responding to question,
he said that the party had agreed that the North East should produced a
replacement to the National Chairman.
"Uptil now they have
not produced any candidate in that regard," Metuh said. (NAN)
