Cinnamon, remedy for arthritis, says Nutritionist

Mrs Aisha Abdullahi, a Nutritionist at Alpha Clinic, Dawaki, Abuja, on Friday, said cinnamon powder could be used in the cure and prevention of arthritis and many other medical conditions.
Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of several trees from the genus cinnamomum that is used in both sweet and savoury foods.
Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that cinnamon contains high level of manganese used in building bones, blood and other connective tissues in the body.
She said ``manganese is a mineral found in cinnamon considered as essential nutrient required by the body for proper functioning.’’
According to her, cinnamon is a natural remedy for arthritis and other medical conditions if taken regularly.
The nutritionist added that the spice was also known for its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties that could reduce symptoms caused by arthritis.
She explained that ``the extracts of cinnamon contain significant amount of phenolic which is responsible for the anti-inflammatory response.’’
She noted that cinnamon was found to restore the amount of hydro xyproline in the tissues which helped to repair and heal damage in the cartilage.
Abdullahi said consumption of cinnamon would also reduce blood sugar in type 2 diabetics, emphasising that its oil had amazing ability to stop medication-resistant yeast infection and also boost the immune system.
She added that the spice was an anti-oxidant which could help to reduce the formation of free radicals in the body and advised that it be added in daily diet such as cereal, oatmeal and coffee.

She said it also aids weight loss. (NAN)
