Dump wastes in drains, face prosecution, Omare warns Deltans

Plans are under way in Delta state to prosecute persons treating drains as waste dump.

The Director-General, Special Programmes, to the State Governor, Chief Frank Omare, disclosed this while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) during its Congress held recently at the Labour House, Asaba.

Chief Omare said persons who build on water channels or trade on top of drains would also be prosecuted.

He revealed that there would be a special sanitation on drains, which he tagged ‘Operation show and empty your drain,’ noting that defaulters stood being committed to prison if found guilty in court.

He warned those using the present harsh economic realities as pretext to break the law to desist from illegalities, saying that many things had wrong today because according to him, a lot of persons compromise too much and do things irresponsibly, explaining however that the target was not to impoverish the public but to do things right.

Chief Omare said he was prepared to do anything for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa within the law to project his SMART Agenda, emphasizing that the governor needed functional people to drive his agenda, stating that he could not afford to disappoint.

He stressed, “Even if I go to Agbor and the governor’s private property is a problem to the area, I’ll bring it down, because we need to do what is right and do it well, and it doesn’t bother me what people say, for If you are doing a good thing that is affecting the illegality of others, you’ll be tagged a devil.

“The assignment given to me by the chief executive, the State Governor, I will pursue it to the letter irrespective of who you are”, Chief Omare said, adding, “What is important is how we can add value and contribute to the development of the state.”

Chief Omare described Governor Okowa as a committed administrator, stressing that he was also strict and straight-forward in his dealings, saying as DG Special Programmes, he was not in government to play but to always crave to justify every work minute and the salary he earn.

Answering question on whether his work description conflicts with the interest of other appointees in government, Chief Omare said even though he regarded his job as an open ended cheque, he believed every appointee was working for a common purpose to bring to fruition the SMART Agenda of Governor Okowa to the benefit of all Deltans.
