The Chief Judge of Delta State,
Honourable Justice Marshal Umukoro, has advocated for greater synergy between
the National Youth Corps (NYSC), and institutions of higher learning to enable
it overcome the challenges of over mobilization of Corps members for the
exercise.

The Chief Judge who described NYSC
as a laudable programme, identified lack of planning in the establishment of
educational institutions as the major challenge confronting the effective
operation of the scheme, even as he enjoined NYSC and educational institutions
to develop a temple to work out modalities to ascertaining how many graduates
the scheme can accommodate from each institution every year, as being practiced
by the Nigerian Council for Legal Education which regulates entrants in the
legal profession.
Describing Delta State as peaceful,
Honourable Umukoro assured the Coordinator of his assistance, stressing that
the Judiciary and the NYSC are partners in progress in the business of securing
the welfare of youths in the State and the nation in general.
He appealed to the State
coordinator to feel at home in spite of the unsubstantiated media reports about
the State, stressing that the press should focus more on positive reportage of
events.
Earlier, the new State Coordinator
of NYSC, Mr. Omotade Ayodele Folarinsho, disclosed that he was in the Chief
Judge’s Office to familiarize himself with the Judiciary, and to solicit for
the continued support and assistance of Judiciary.
Mr. Ayodele who commended the Chief
Judge for judicious carrying out his statutory functions of swearing in corps
members posted to the State, called for greater cooperation between NYSC and
the Judiciary.
Contrary to people’s perception of
NYSC as FEDERAL Government Programme alone, the State Coordinator asserted that
it is actually everybody’s programme, since the administration, management and
implementation of the programme is particularly meant for the states where the
corps members are deployed.
The coordinator, who was accompanied
by Director of NYSC, explained that about 10,000 Corps members posted to the
State, over 90 percent were deployed to schools in remote areas where they are
rendering valuable services to the State.
